Units
What do you want to know?
How do I measure my area?
  1. Use a tape measure or measuring wheel. Measure the length and width of the area in feet, or in metres if you switch units.
  2. For a shape that is not a simple rectangle, such as an L-shaped driveway, split it into rectangles and circles. Enter the first one here and use Add another area for the rest. They are added together.
  3. Depth is in inches (centimetres in metric). If you are not sure, use one of the quick buttons under the depth box for a common choice.
  4. Already know the total square footage? Choose Known area.

Enter your supplier price to estimate material cost. Delivery and tax are not included.

Added to the bulk estimate when you enter a price above.

Optional. Heavy materials can reach your vehicle weight limit before it is full, so check its payload rating.

Density used

Default density is 100 lb per cubic foot, about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Dry sand is commonly quoted at about 1.3 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard and damp sand at about 1.5 to 1.7, so choose the option that fits or enter your supplier's number.

Depth: typical ranges

These are common ranges, not requirements. Your soil, climate, and local rules may call for something different.

How this is calculated

Area times depth gives volume in cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply by the density and divide by 2,000 to get tons.

A thin bedding layer is easy to over- or under-order because small depth errors change the total a lot. Check the finished depth after screeding, and keep a little extra.

Example: a 10 ft by 10 ft area at 1 inches deep, with 5% extra, needs about 0.44 tons (0.32 cubic yards).

How far does one ton go?

Area covered by one ton at different depths, before any extra material.

Common questions

How much sand do I need?

Multiply the area in square feet by the depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Multiply cubic feet by the density and divide by 2,000 for tons.

How many tons are in a cubic yard of sand?

At the default density, about 1.35 tons per cubic yard. Moisture and the type of sand change this.

How much sand goes under pavers?

A bedding layer of about 1 inch is commonly used, but follow your paver manufacturer's guidance, including the type of sand they recommend.

How much area does a ton of sand cover?

About 240 square feet at 1 inch deep and about 120 square feet at 2 inches deep.

Should I order extra sand?

A small allowance is common. The default is 5%. Change it under the advanced options.

Does moisture change how much sand I need?

The volume you need stays the same, but damp sand weighs more per cubic yard. If you buy by the ton, choose the damp option so the tonnage is not underestimated.
